What is a PhD Degree?
The PhD (“Doctor of Philosophy”) is a prestigious doctorate awarded in many different specialisations. Typically lasting between 3 and 5 years, the program offers rigorous academic and research training. In most fields, the PhD is the first degree earned and is considered the highest level of scholarship. The methods differ slightly in various fields but typically involve coursework to gain knowledge, followed by original research over several years. Even the coursework that PhD students take for credit is somehow related to their future work, such as data structures, databases, or developing new and improved web applications.
One important aspect of earning a PhD is that many people pursue it with the intention of teaching at a university, and teaching a course is an integral part of that position. Additionally, the potential financial compensation for PhD holders is significant. However, before a student can enter a Ph.D. program, they must have earned a bachelor’s degree, and often a master’s degree as well, in the same or a related field.
It is not realistic to expect someone to complete a Ph.D. in physics, for example, without already having a bachelor’s and master’s degree. Some professors may suggest this as a possibility, but if it doesn’t seem feasible to you, it’s best to ignore that suggestion and make a different decision. Most students transition directly from their bachelor’s degree to a Ph.D. program.
It is worth noting that having a bachelor’s degree in mathematics alone may not hold much value. In such cases, we recommend pursuing further education. Only students with exceptional academic records in their bachelor’s studies should consider this path.
In a Ph.D. program, students typically take advanced courses in their field, conduct original research with guidance from their advisors, pass comprehensive exams, and ultimately write and defend a dissertation. The process takes several years, and the main outcome is often a teaching job.
Why Study PhD?

- Have a better career: It provides more advanced career prospects in academia, research, and highly specialized niches.
- Personal achievement: Getting a PhD is a great personal achievement and an excellent source of fulfilment.
